Maryland

June 13, 2019 By Ron Decker in STATES No Comments Tags: maryland, state

”’Maryland”’ is a small state in the eastern United States, one of the so-called Mid-Atlantic states and one of the 13 states that committed the American revolution.

The capital of the state is Annapolis.

Maryland’s nicknames

Old Line State, Free State, Little America, America in Miniature

Area

Maryland area

Total 12,407 sq mi (32,133 km2)
Width 196 miles (315 km)
Length 119 miles (192 km)

History

Maryland was one of the 13 founding states of the United States that opposed British rule and signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
The history of the state began in 1632, when George Calvert, 1st Lord Baltimore, received the Royal Certificate from Charles I to settle the lands of Maryland. Baron, who was asked to create a protection for Catholics in the New World, died the same year, but the patent was rewritten for his son Cecil. Cecil organized an expedition under the leadership of his younger brother Leonard, and on March 25, 1634, the ships with the first group of immigrants, consisting of 17 gentlemen with their wives, reached the desired shore. This day is considered to be the founding date of the province of Maryland, named after the wife of Charles I.

The land became a paradise for representatives of various Christian groups, and for tens of thousands of English prisoners. In 1949, the province passed a law on religious tolerance, one of the first in America, but it did not save Maryland from the subsequent brutal struggle between Catholics and Protestants.
April 28, 1788, Maryland became the seventh USA state. In December 1790, the state allocated land for the residence of the federal government of George Washington, where the District of Columbia was formed.
During the Civil War, despite its sympathy for the Confederation (the southern states), the state joined the Union (the northern states) because of its proximity to Washington. Besides, in Maryland at that time, half of the black population was already free. However, 23% of the military fought on the side of the Confederation.

Maryland’s loyalty to the center was once again questioned in 1919 when Washington imposed a ban on alcohol throughout the country. Residents of the state opposed the “dry law.” For this, oddly enough, Maryland got the nickname “Free State.”

Demographics

Around 5,850,000 people live in Maryland. Maryland is one of the most densely populated states, with an average population density of 619 / sq mi (238 / km2).

The largest city in the state is Baltimore, in which they live about 620,000 people. The other major towns of Maryland are Frederick (over 65,000), Rockville (over 60,000), Gaithersburg (about 60,000) and Bowie (about 55,000).

In 1630, a colony of the Massachusetts Bay appeared on the map, in the same year the city of Boston was founded. Migrants worked tirelessly. In 1636 Harvard University, the oldest institution of higher education in the United States, appeared in Cambridge, near Boston.
The life of former British people began to change in the better way, which could not be said about the indigenous people of these places. During the seventeenth century, the missionaries were active in preaching Christianity, and many Indians accepted it.
Indians who disagree with the new way of life died in clashes with the British or were forced out of their ancestral territories.

In Massachusetts, the War of Independence of the USA began in the years 1775-1783. In 1773, residents of Boston raised a rebellion that remained in history as “Boston Tea Party.”

History

Several Indian tribes Ojibuei, Menomini, Ottawa, Miami, and Potawatomi lived on the territory of Michigan. All of them were Algonquin – a group of indigenous peoples of North America, united by the kinship of the language. The total number of indigenous people before the arrival of Europeans reached 35 thousand people.

The first Europeans penetrated to these places was the French travelers and hunters. In 1622, the Frenchman Etienne Brühle visited these areas: he explored the Great Lakes region and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. But only 40 years later, in 1668, the first permanent settlement appeared here – the Catholic mission of Salt St. Mary on the Upper Peninsula, founded by Jesuit missionary Jacques Marquette.

At the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th centuries, settlements appeared along the entire Michigan coast of the Great Lakes. In 1701, French officer Antoine de la Mot Cadillac founded a fort on the Lower Peninsula, which later became Detroit, one of the largest industrial cities in the United States.
The French were not involved in the economic development of the territory, preferring the purchase of furs and missionary activity.
In the second half of the XVIII century, Michigan became the property of Great Britain. The British held this territory until the very end of the 18th century, even after the defeat of the US War of Independence (1775-1783) and the recognition of the United States as an independent state.
The population of Michigan began to grow sharply after the Erie Canal was opened in 1825, connecting the Hudson River and New York with the Great Lakes. The state of Michigan became the twenty-sixth state of the USA in 1837.

In the middle of the XIX century, iron and copper were found on the Upper Peninsula, which marked the beginning of the development of the mining industry.
Michigan massively joined the army of northerners during the American Civil War of 1861-1865.
Michigan became the center of the USA auto industry.
In the 1960s a significant number of Afro-Americans settled in Michigan. They were unhappy with unemployment, and in 1967, a civil disturbance occurred in Detroit, known as the 12th Street Riot.

Minnesota was home to the Ojibwe, Dakota, and Winnebago Indian tribes. French fur buyers, who were the first Europeans in the 17th century that penetrated these places, had to respect the Indians at the very beginning. The number of white people was too small, and the tribes were very aggressive.
The struggle of France and England for the control of these territories and the purchase of furs led to full-scale wars, in which Indian tribes participated, drawn as allies. As a result of wars, new diseases, and famine, the number of Indians was continually decreasing.
In 1862, after another uprising, the Dakota tribe was evicted from Minnesota. Some Indians of other tribes remained in Minnesota on reservations.

The area of present-day Minnesota east of Mississippi became part of the United States after the War of Independence, another region, in the west, passed to the United States as a result of the Louisiana purchase of 1803.
On March 3, 1849, the Territory of Minnesota emerged from Iowa, which initially included much of modern North and South Dakota. May 11, 1858, Minnesota was admitted to the Union, becoming the 32nd state of the country. The state constitution was adopted in 1858.

During the Civil War, fighting in Minnesota was not conducted. State officials fought in the army of northerners.

Mississippi lags far behind in the economic development of the other states of the USA; it occupies the last place regarding GDP relative to its population.

This situation is primarily due to historical reasons.
Natural disasters also cause significant damage to the Mississippi economy. “The great flood on the Mississippi” in 1927, the hurricanes “Camilla” in 1969 and “Katrina” in 2005, numerous other blows of elements not only claimed hundreds of lives but also greatly influenced the development of the state.

History

From the XVI century, the Europeans for a long time figured out who will be the owner of these lands. The French, the Spaniards, and the British designated their claims to it. However, as a result, American territories was under USA control. Such an outcome was preceded by the American Revolutionary War. And after it, the victorious Americans had to buy the French part of Mississippi for $ 15 million from Napoleon Bonaparte in 1803. December 10, 1817, Mississippi officially became the 20th USA state.

Soon the state was in the top five wealthiest states, thanks to the cultivation of cotton and the active use of slave labor. Before the Civil War (1861–65), the number of Afro-American slaves was 437,000, and the white population — 354,000. With the start of the war, Mississippi became the second state of the Confederation of the South, and its local Davis became president.

To the accepted characteristics of Mississippi: “Magnolia State,” “Hospitality State” you can add one more – “Motherland of American Writers.”
Land, cotton, and water helped the Mississippi become one of the wealthiest states. But, being in a difficult situation after the end of the Civil War, the state loses its economic leadership in the country.
As a result, Mississippi was one of the least prosperous regions in the United States.

History

Historically, the state has always been considered as the southern state. This is because of both the influx of migrants from the South and its status as a slave state during the American Civil War of 1861-1865.
People settled in these places for seven thousand years before the first Europeans appeared here. For a thousand years before our era, Mississippi culture existed on the territory of Missouri. For unclear reasons, this culture fell into decay, people left this lands, and St. Louis got the nickname “Kurgan city” – because of a large number of these artificial bulk structures.

The first Europeans in these places were the French Canadians, who founded the city of Sainte-Genevieve in 1735. The land of Missouri became part of New France.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the United States offered France to buy that part of New France that stretched from Louisiana to the Canadian border. Napoleon Bonaparte understood that the Americans could simply take away New France from him, and therefore he sold it at a price of 7 cents per hectare. March 10, 1804, in St. Louis, the ownership of New France, including the land of the future state of Missouri, officially transferred it from France to the United States.
At the same time, Missouri got the nickname “Gates to the West,” because new waves of migrants from Europe that were sent to conquer the Wild West started their way here. Many slaves were brought here to work on tobacco and corn plantations. In 1821, Missouri officially became the 24th state of the United States, after which its population doubled every 10 years.

During the Civil War between the North and the South, Missouri entered the Confederation of the Southern States for some time but soon left it.
As a result of the development of the Union Pacific rail network, the importance of the largest cities St. Louis and Kansas City has increased manifold.
Now, as well as two hundred years ago, coal and limestone are mined here, and tribal bulls and pigs are raised. In the 20th century, aerospace and chemical enterprises appeared in large cities.

Demographics

Around 6,000,000 people live in Missouri. The average population density in the state is about 87.1/sq mi  (33.7/km2).

History

The Sioux, Crow, Assiniboine, Cheyennes, and other tribes lived on the territory of Montana. Nobody bothered them until the 18th century when Canadian hunters of fur-bearing animals hit the area of Montana. The Indians did not know that their land was already the territory of the French colony of Louisiana, and later, after 1803, the property of the United States of America. In 1805-1806, the famous Lewis and Clarke Land Passage Expedition assigned the newly acquired lands to the state.

After the hunters, the missionaries reached out to Montana. In the 60s of the XIX century, the conflicts of Indians with immigrants became continual – too many gold seekers went to these lands.
The policy of the USA government aimed to relocate Indians to reservations and expel them from their own lands. It caused a long war. The battle of Little Bighorn was one of the most significant events of that war. The USA Army eventually won, and the remnants of the Indian tribes were forced to move to the reservation.

During the gold rush, Montana became the real gold center of the Wild West. Gold was quickly exhausted, crowds of gold miners often turned into gangs of robbers, and relations with the Indians were worse than ever.
In the early 80s of the 20th century, mining operations were resumed at the industrial level, in 1883 the construction of the North Pacific Railway led to significant changes in the economy of Montana, which became the 41st state of the United States in 1889.

History

The Spaniards were the first Europeans that visited territories of Nevada in the 16th century. In 1776, two Franciscan missionaries, Silvestre de Escalante and Francisco Dominguez, crossed the stony lands of Nevada in search of a path between the Spanish missions in California and New Mexico. Only in 1843-44, John Freemont was able to explore the area of the Great Basin during numerous expeditions. He marked this place on the map and organized the first settlement on the territories of present Nevada.

Until 1848, the territory of Nevada was part of Mexico. After the USA -Mexican War (1847–1848), it withdrew to the United States, but until 1861 it was part of Utah until it separated and gained the own name, shortened from the Sierra Nevada. In 1864, Nevada became the 36th USA state.
In 1859, a rich deposit of gold and silver was discovered in the Virginia City area. A large number of hunters for quick mining went here to look for happiness after their attempts to find the precious metal in California were unsuccessful. But the local deposits were quickly exhausted. Abandoned cities in different parts of the state are reminiscent of the “gold rush” that once covered these lands.

Casinos have become commonplace in the mining towns of Nevada. In 1909, they were banned, but, due to a sharp decline in mining, state authorities legalized the playing business, hoping to support the economy with the help of poker, roulette, and blackjack. Today, playing is the most developed sector of the Nevada economy.

History

The northeastern coast of America was explored by French and British colonialists in the early 17th century. The first permanent settlement was organized by a group of English fishermen near the city of Portsmouth in 1623. They built a fortress and several buildings for processing fish. The colony, which later became the state of New Hampshire, was founded by Captain John Mason in 1629. He named it after the English county of Hampshire.

New Hampshire was one of the thirteen colonies that rebelled against British rule and initiated the American Revolutionary War.
Actually, it was the New Hampshire people who began the American Revolution, capturing the British Fort William and Mary in December 1774. The rebels were supplied with weapons and gunpowder in that battle. This contribution of the state to the struggle of Americans for freedom was taken into account when signing the Declaration of Independence.
In 1784, the constitution of New Hampshire came into power, and the state ratified the Constitution of the United States in 1788.

In 1809, the hero of the War of Independence, a New Hampshire general John Stark, was unable to meet his fellow soldiers on the anniversary of the Battle of Bennington for health reasons and sent them a letter with a toast: “Live free or die. Death is not the worst of evils. ” The first part of this phrase was in 1945 the official motto of the state of New Hampshire, famous for its strong desire for independence.
The concept of freedom in this state was respected at the internal level. Slave labor had never been significant in its economy. Even before the beginning of the Civil War, abolitionist public organizations were operating here. By the way, today the black population of the state is tiny about 1%.
Natural sights began to attract tourists to New Hampshire from the beginning of the 20th century. Since the 1970s, tourism has become a vital source of income for the state.
