Validation

Current license: Ghost image, with overlapping laser perforation in the shape of Arizona. Raised tactile print in “date of birth” field. UV feature.

Prior license: “Grand Canyon State” and state silhouette in holographic overlay; state seal visible under UV light; microprinting.

1 letter followed by 8 digits or Social Security number. Social Security number only if formerly used and licensee requests it.

Term

Valid until age 65 (formerly 60); then 5 years, expiring on birthday. 6-month extension available if out of state for more than 30 days.

CDL has “COMMERCIAL DRIVER LICENSE” (current license) or “Commercial Driver License” (prior license), below headbar. Drive-only cards have black bar below headbar, stating (in white) ‘NOT VALID FOR FEDERAL IDENTIFICATION, VOTING OR PUBLIC BENEFIT PURPOSES.”

Minor’s license

Vertical format with black “UNDER 21” to right of photo (current license) or in red above photo (prior license). Probationary (red bar) and restricted (blue bar) are horizontal and are issued to drivers of all ages.

Current license: Fine-line background on front and back; primary and secondary photos of holder are laser-engraved; the smaller image, in a clear window, also visible on the back; “Colorado,” state logo, and wavy line of microprinting fluoresce blue under UV light (see page 72); outline of state capitol appears blue and gold under UV on back.

9 digits, unspaced. First two are coded as: 01-12 = birth month if odd-year birth; 13-24 = birth month if even-year birth.

Term

6 years for all non-CDL licenses, 6 years for renewals, 4 years for CDLs; drivers over 65 can request 2-year photo license renewal. All expire on birthday.

As of October 1,2008,8 years (4 years for CDL with hazmat endorsement), expiring on birthday. Previously, 4 or 6 years, expiring on birthday; up to IVi years with 18-month early renewal. Temporary license expires when holder’s legal presence expires.

Beginning 5/04/16, 8 years; hazmat CDL, 5 years; minor’s provisional license, 5 years; limited permits and non-U.S. citizens, shorter terms. (Prior to that date, 5 or 10 years, holder’s choice.) All except hazmat CDL expire on birthday; some permits expire 2 years after issuance. For non-U.S. citizens, expiration date matches that on immigration documentation, 5 years maximum; if no expiration date on documentation, 1 year.

Term

As of November 3, 2008, 8 years for dri-vers 25-71, 4 years for under 25. Expires on birthday, except provisional license expires on 19th birthday. Previously, 6 years for drivers 18-71, expiring on birthday; 2 years for drivers 72 and older. Prior to January 2006, provisional license expires on 19th birthday, minor’s license on 21st birthday; previously, 4 years for drivers 16-17. 6-month early renewal option available, making some licenses valid for over 4 or 6 years.
