”’Alaska”’ is a state in the north-west of America, the United States exclave, separated from other American states by the territory of Canada.
This state is the most extensive state in the USA, famous for its natural resources. On the territory of Alaska, there are more than 3 million lakes and 3 thousand rivers – the Yukon River, the 3rd in length in the United States; 100 thousand glaciers (5% of the surface of Alaska); the highest peak of North America – McKinley Peak; about 70 active volcanoes.
Alaska is placed in the north-west of the mainland, isolated from the Chukchi Peninsula (Russia) by the Bering Strait. It consists of the continent and a vast amount of islands: the Alexander Archipelago, Pribilof Islands, the Aleutian Islands, and Kodiak Island. The Arctic and Pacific Oceans wash Alaska.
Alaska, unlike most other states in the United States with the leading local administrative division – county, has different administrative division -borough. There is one more important difference between Alaska and other states. 15 borough and the municipality of Anchorage cover only a part of Alaska’s territory. The rest of the area does not have enough population for the formation of the local government. The territories that are not part of any borough are divided into so-called census areas. There are 11 such regions in Alaska.
The capital of Alaska is Juneau. The city was founded in 1881, soon after the discovery of gold deposits. Named after the gold digger Joseph Juneau.

History
The community of Siberian tribes passed the Isthmus (now the Bering Strait) 16-10 thousand years ago. The first Europeans that attended Alaska were Vitus Bering and Alexander Chirikov in 1741. Alaska became a territory of Russia in 1744. The region was named “Russian America.” The Russian settlement was founded in 1784 on Kodiak Island.
The United States bought Alaska from Russia in 1867 for $ 7.2 million. It was a result of negotiations between the Russian envoy E.A. Stekl and Secretary of State William Seward.
Gold deposits were found five years later. Alaska developed gradually until the beginning of the gold rush on Klondike in 1896. It became a state in 1959.
Demographics
Despite the fact that Alaska is one of the least populated in the United States America, many new residents moved to the state in the 1970s, intrigued by jobs in the oil and transport industry. In the 1980s population increase was more than 36 percent.
About 75 percent of the population is natives of the United States. There are about 86 thousand local people in the state ( Iñupiat, Yupik, Aleut, Eyak, Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian, and a number of Northern Athabaskan cultures). Russian descendants also live in Alaska, but not in such a significant amount. The main religious groups include Catholics, Baptists, Orthodox, Protestants, and Methodists. For the past 20 years, state residents have traditionally voted for Republicans.

History
The Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, Koasati, and, of course, the Alabama tribe inhabited the state. Spaniard Hernando De Soto explored these lands in 1540. The French, led by de Bienville, founded the first permanent European settlement in the area of the modern city of Mobile in 1702. France ceded the territory of Alabama to Great Britain in 1763, and in turn, Great Britain was forced to gave it to the United States in 1813. Spain kept Mobile up to 1813. The defeat of the Creeks in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend led to an influx of white settlers who made plantation slavery the basis of the economy. The city of Montgomery was the first capital of the Confederation. The state was seriously suffered during The American Revolutionary War.
The development of industries began by the end of the 19th century, but monoculture (cotton) led to a large-scale depression in agriculture, reinforced in 1915 by the invasion of cotton weevils. Changes in the economy in the 30’s led to the development of energy and the iron and steel industry. In the 1950s-1960s, despite severe racial problems, the state completely switched to the path of industrialization.
Demographics
The ethnic population of the state: about 74% – English-speaking Americans, about 25% – African Americans and 1% – Indians, Hispanic people, people from Asia. The majority of the population lives in cities. Most of the community is Protestant. For more than twenty years (since 1963), state policy has been determined by the governor-South Democrat George Wallace; Republicans began to win positions from the end of the 60s.

Arizona’s capital is Phoenix. It is the biggest city in the state. The town was founded under the name Phoenix on February 25, 1881. In this place was an old Indian settlement. The name is compared with the name of the mythological bird Phoenix.

Area

Width 310 miles (500 km)

History
The first people came to the territory of Arizona about 12 thousand years ago. However, the growth of pre-Columbian culture in these lands falls on the XI-XIII centuries. At that time agriculture and crafts sphere prospered there.
At the beginning of the XVI century, the Spaniards for the first time penetrated the lands of future Arizona. However, they did not seek to stay there. Military posts and the Catholic missions of the Spaniards were rare in Arizona and were often attacked by native Indians.
From the second quarter of the XIX century, which had already become Mexican, colonists from the USA actively penetrate the territory of Arizona. As a result of the Mexican War in 1848, the United States received all the lands of Arizona located north of the Gila River. In 1853, the United States bought another 76,735 km2 from the Mexican government, located south of the Gila River.
Arizona, which had already become a district in 1863, turns out to be the area of the struggles of the Indians for the right to live on their land. The result of that was massive Indian human losses and moving to the reservation.
After that white colonists began to explore all the agricultural resources of Arizona. Arizona was becoming more attractive for development since the new railway was built.
February 14, 1912, the USA President William Taft signed the document to make Arizona 48th state of the USA. For a long time, Arizona remained the youngest state in the country.
The native people of Arizona were apparently not satisfied with the living conditions in reservations. In 1948, the Arizona Indians in the United States Supreme Court won a lawsuit against state authorities — they received the right to participate in elections. Native American activists fought in all legal ways to improve the quality of life of their tribesmen. The first college in the Indian reservation was built in 1969 for the Navajo tribe.
Demographics
In 1980 Arizona’s population was 16.2% Hispanic, 5.6% Native American, and 74.5% non-Hispanic white. In 2010, the racial makeup of the state was 29.6% Hispanics or Latinos of any race made up and 57.8% Non-Hispanic whites formed the total population.

Arkansas
By Ron Decker in STATES No Comments Tags: arkansas, state
”’Arkansas”’ is the southern state of the United States of America.
The state is bordered with Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Missouri. In many places, the eastern border of the state is determined generally by the changes of the river flow.
The name of the state comes from the language of the Indians who lived in Arkansas territories.
The word “Arkansas” came in the English language from the French “Arcansas.” In turn, the French, who founded the first settlements on the lands of Arkansas, borrowed the word akakaze from the Kvapo language, which means “the land of people living down the river.”
In accordance with another version, the word Akakaze, that means “people of the southern wind” in the language of Cuy Indians, formed the name of the state.
Arkansas has no large cities. The capital of the state is Little Rock with the 200 thousand citizens.
The Arkansas state was the area of the old French colonies purchased by the United States of America in 1803.

Area

Total 53,180 sq mi (137,733 km2)
Width 270 miles (435 km)
Length 240 miles (386 km)
History
Arkansas was recognized as a part of the United States as a result of the Louisiana purchase, the deal made personally by Napoleon. Initially, it was supposed to sell the USA only New Orleans for 10 million dollars, but Napoleon made a grand gesture and proposed the entire territory of Louisiana for cost larger one and a half times more.
The territory from the Rocky Mountains to the Mississippi River and from the Rupert’s Land Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of Mexico covered more than 2 million square kilometers.
The third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, chose to make the deal with some struggles because the USA Constitution did not say anything about the possibility of acquiring land of this size from different countries. The main argument in favor of the “Louisiana Purchase” was the need to rule over the New Orleans port, trade through which was blocked by Spain and France. In 1803, the purchase agreement was signed.
The final price of the transaction amounted more than 23 million dollars. Even if in those times the value of the dollar was many times higher than today, still the United States made a very successful purchase.
Demographics
Many residents who call themselves “Americans” are English or Northern Irish origins, but their families have been living in the state for so long (sometimes since Arkansas was formed) that they indicate themselves as Native Americans. Many of those who pointed out Irish origin, in fact, have a northern Irish background.
According to a 2006-2008 American Society Survey, 93.8% of Arkansas residents (over five years of age) speak English only in their homes. About 4.5% of the population speaks Spanish at home. About 0.7% communicate in other Indo-European languages. About 0.8% speak Asian languages.

Area
California area
Total 163,696 sq mi (423,970 km2)
Width 250 miles (400 km)
Length 770 miles (1,240 km)
History
The earliest European, visited the California territories in 1542, was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. He claimed the lands as the property of Spanish. The region received its name California because of the famous Spanish novel, published in 1510, which told about the fictional paradise island of California.
At the very beginning of the XVII century, navigator Sebastián Vizcaíno, a researcher of the California coast and creator of San Diego, Santa Catalina, Santa Barbara, and Monterey names, reaffirmed the Spain rights to this land. However, the persistent growth of California began only at the end of the XVII century, when Spain, trying to gain a foothold on the North American continent and to oppose American expansion, started sending colonists from Mexico to California.
In the XVIII century, the Spanish occupation began in the way of military campaign combined with a religious mission. The Spaniards under the command of Gaspar de Portola and the leadership of the Franciscan monk Junipero Serra carried out the colonization of California. In 1769 they organized the San Diego de Alcala mission (the current city of San Diego), and later another 20 missions that were one day away from each other. The youngest Spanish mission was San Francisco de Solano, founded in 1823.
When Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, California became its province. However, these lands attracted the northern neighbors of Mexico. The annexation of California was the result of the Mexican-American War (1846–48). The bitterness of defeat for the Mexican people aggravated the discovery of deposits of gold ore near the city of Sacramento. In 1849 the famous “gold rush” began there. Many Mexicans have not yet accepted the loss of California. They dream of returning this territory, and it does not even matter for them that tectonic forces are raging in its depths, causing frequent and intense earthquakes.
However, the danger that waits for the people of California every day does not reduce the number of its population. It is still the most populated state in the United States.
Demographics
Presently, California is the global leader in the modern technologies industry. Space flights, computer science, microelectronics, biotechnology are the basis of the development of the state.
Silicon Valley is a chain of cities that has the shape of an arc. It starts north of San Francisco and comes to San Jose. This area is known worldwide as the area of information technologies.
California is the most populated state in the United States (12% of the whole population).
There is no absolute ethnic majority in California. Majority of the population is still white, they followed by Latin Americans (almost a third), Asians, African-Americans, and American Indians. Experts predict that Hispanics will constitute an absolute majority of California’s population by 2040. The reasons for this are the massive flow of immigration from Mexico and the high birth rate among them.

”’Connecticut”’ is a state in the northeastern of the United States, part of the New England region.
The largest city is Bridgeport. The name of the state of Connecticut, like many other names of the USA states, comes from the language of the Indians. On the territory of the modern state of Connecticut lived Indians of one of the Algonquian tribes – Mohegans. The word quinatucquet in Mohegan means “long river.” The names of the Connecticut River and the State of Connecticut comes from this particular word.
The capital of Connecticut is Hartford.

History
Until the XVII century, the territory of Connecticut was inhabited by the Algonquians, a group of tribes. There were about seven thousand Indians.
The first Europeans settled in Connecticut in 1613. However, in 1633 they were pressed down by English colonists, who began to develop a vast territory, which they called New England. The Europeans moved to the mouth of the Hudson River, and in 1624 they founded the city of New Amsterdam (New York).
The British called the first settlement Windsor.
The Pequot War broke out in 1637. Part of the Indians sided the British, and the defeated Pequots left Connecticut. On January 14, 1639, the Connecticut colony was established, and its inhabitants created a code of laws called Fundamental Orders. That is the reason why one of the official nicknames of Connecticut is “the state of the first Constitution.”
The War of Independence (1773-1783) was the war in which the people of Connecticut distinguished themselves, earning another nickname for their state at the end of the war: “the arsenal of the nation.”
In 1788, the state, among the thirteen first states, adopted the USA Constitution. In 1792, Congress, encouraging the development of industry in the United States, adopted the “income act,” which established high rates of taxes on the import of manufactured goods.
The First World War gave a new stimulus to the development of industry in the state, especially to enterprises that manufactured weapons and ammunition. Moreover, the acquired safety margin was enough to leave the period of the Great Depression of 1929-1938 without much loss. Then, during World War II, there was some other rise of industrial production and a new stage in the modernization and expansion of production for the military-industrial complex.
Demographics
Around 3,600,000 people live in Connecticut (twenty-ninth in population). The average population density in the state is about 739 / sq mi (fourth in the United States, the population density is higher only in the states of New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts).
Connecticut ranks first among the USA states on the human development index.
The largest cities of Connecticut are Bridgeport (about 145,000 inhabitants), New Haven (about 130,000 inhabitants), the state capital of Hartford (about 125,000 inhabitants), Stamford (more than 120,000 inhabitants) and Waterbury (about 110,000 inhabitants).

History
The first people visited the territory of the state arrived from Holland, England, and Sweden at the beginning of the 17th century. The Delaware tribe was fierce warriors, but initially, they peacefully coexisted with the whites. Indians willingly accepted gifts from white people and signed papers to donate their forests and fields. The Indians understood the situation and began to fight the whites when the colony of New Sweden appeared on their territory.
In 1681 New Sweden was finally liquidated, and its lands became part of several English colonies, including Delaware.
In 1767 the lands were divided and the famous “Mason-Dixon line” appeared. It is still part of the border today, separating the states of Maryland and Pennsylvania from Delaware.
By the time this border appeared, there were almost no Delaware Indians. All of them was exiled to Oklahoma and Canada, where they still live on a reservation in the province of Ontario.
During the American War of Independence (1775-83) residents of the state did not want to break the connection with England. Delaware had more independence from the metropolis than other British colonies in North America, and actively traded with Britain.
Nevertheless, it was the voice of Delaware who played a decisive role in the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
Delaware adopted its first constitution, declared itself as a state, and the first governors received the title of President of the State of Delaware.
During the Civil War of 1861–65, the majority of the population of Delaware sided with the northerners, but there were also many who fought on the side of the Confederates.
Delaware very well earned on wars, producing gunpowder and weapons.
With the beginning of the crisis enterprises in the state became smaller, which pushed the state to develop the tourism sector.
Demographics
Around 910,000 people live in Delaware (forty-fifth among the USA states). The average population density in Delaware is about 469/sq mi.
